Chapter 22

I woke up early the next morning, my head full of the night before. Maybe I should have taken on board what Aurora had told me when we first met – that her brother wasn’t looking for a relationship. But something way beyond my comprehension had happened and I had literally fallen hook, line and sinker on the spot.

Because of Bert going away later that day, I had an early start, so maybe I would just get up and go and see if I could catch the sunrise – something I had been promising myself I would do. Perhaps it would help me put things into perspective.

‘Come on Nacho, time to get up.’ I gave him a little push and he opened his eyes, not looking at all thrilled at the prospect. I dressed quickly, putting on as many layers as I could. The weather had changed over the last couple of days; the wind had whipped up and the temperature had dropped considerably.

I made a mug of Stan’s coffee, grabbed the massive bunch of keys Meg had given me, took Bert’s torch, and went to see if I could get onto the roof terrace. I climbed up the spiral stairwell, Nacho at my heels, and got to a platform at the top with a locked door. About twelve keys later, I opened the door onto a flat roof that ran across the length of both apartments. A parapet about four-foot-high protected the perimeter. I was pleased, as it was so windy up there that I thought we were in danger of being blown over the top and into the sea below. I huddled in the doorway, sipping my coffee, and looked out across the sea. The darkness of night was turning to dawn as the first colours of the day began to appear. I could make out Greater Reef. The birds had begun their morning routine, exercising their vocal chords, and there was a faint orange glow beginning to rise on the horizon as I watched the day come alive. The sky was bathed in citrus light, which turned to a deep burnt orange, then literally glowed pillar box red. It reminded me of that saying: Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd’s warning. I hoped it wasn’t an omen of things to come. It was well worth freezing my butt off for such a spectacular sight, although I wasn’t sure Nacho would agree, his little body shivering in the cold. What he needed was one of those cute hand knitted Christmas dog jumpers that I spotted in Love Lindisfarne, which would keep him toasty. I locked the door and went back to the apartment for breakfast, before going out into the yard and starting my chores.

Bert and Meg set off for Alnwick that afternoon. We’d got all the animals settled down before they left, leaving only the alpacas and donkeys in the paddocks; and I would take the dogs out for a run later before the usual lock up routine.
